from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Altheim (born August 2, 1871 in Groß-Gerau , † December 25, 1914 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German painter and etcher of the 19th and 20th centuries in Hesse.

life and work

The painter Wilhelm Altheim was the younger brother of Georg Altheim . Altheim was a student of JH Hasselhorst from 1886 to 1890 and from 1890 to 1894 with Frank Kirchbach at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main . Altheim was initially based in Eschersheim near Frankfurt and from 1895 in Frankfurt.

This was followed by study visits:

  • 1894 in Paris.
  • 1904/05 among others in Italy.
  • 1907 in Holland.
  • 1909 in the south of France.

From 1912, Altheim was resident in Frankfurt again.

Altheim was a member of the "Free Association of Darmstadt Artists" and the "Association of Art Friends in the Countries on the Rhine". He received an honorary salary from the latter association at times.

Influenced by Pidoll , Altheim painted with a monumental tendency nature and people from his immediate surroundings and closer homeland, especially landscapes far away, portraits, historical and religious motifs, and farmer and soldier scenes (drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, tempera and mixed media) . After 1900, inspired by B. Mannfeld, he also worked as an etcher (e.g. The Shepherds of Bethlehem , etching from 1912 in the Karl August Reiser collection, Bonn). His 35 plates (mainly made after 1908) are monogrammed WA, others AA. His drawings are still highly valued by collectors in the Rhine-Main area.
