Georg Altheim (born March 10, 1865 in Groß-Gerau , † July 19, 1928 in Darmstadt ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Georg Altheim was the older brother of the painter Wilhelm Altheim (1871–1914). First, a civil servant by profession, he has casually autodidact trained and began in 1895 to expand under the direction of his younger brother Wilhelm and various other Darmstadt artists, his work. Towards the end of the 19th century he came out with his own works. In 1900 he became a member of the "Free Association of Darmstadt Artists", with which he exhibited annually, and from 1904 he also belonged to the "Association of Art Friends in the States on the Rhine". He was also a member of the German Association of Artists .

His approx. 200 oil paintings, painted with a sharp brush in a thin application of paint, are natural, spacious, mostly bright landscapes, especially from the Rhine plain in the vicinity of Darmstadt, which he depicted in all seasons and also in night pictures. In addition, Altheim also created pictures from Upper Hesse, the Odenwald, the Black Forest, the Rhine and the sea. The light and airy pictures also made him known nationwide.

The same motifs are also used in the woodcuts (over 60, 2 of them in color, only 2 with staffage) and the fine-toned color drawings. The charcoal and red chalk drawings also include figurative representations and portraits.
