Wilhelm Börner (doctor)

Wilhelm Börner (born June 5, 1927 in Obermichelbach ; † November 14, 2011 in Würzburg ) was a German nuclear medicine specialist . He was professor of nuclear medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

biography

Börner studied medicine at the University of Erlangen from 1948 to 1953 , became a member of the musical student association AMV Fridericiana Erlangen in 1951 and received his doctorate in 1953 with a thesis on radiation biology under Professor Wachsmann. Two years later he began to work in radiation biology and laboratory medicine at the Würzburg University Hospital. Under his leadership, the local nuclear medicine was founded in 1956 as the isotope department of the Medical Polyclinic. From 1955 to 1961 he trained in internal medicine with Heinrich Franke . During this time he stayed in England several times for study purposes, including at the Isotope School in Harwell. After being recognized as a specialist in 1961, he qualified as a professor in nuclear medicine. In 1966 Börner took over the management of the isotope department of the University Polyclinic in Würzburg. Two years later he became an adjunct professor. From 1976 Börner headed the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Würzburg. When the chair for nuclear medicine was newly established in 1987, Börner took it over and was also appointed director of the clinic and polyclinic for nuclear medicine. Börner retired in 1994, and Christoph Reiners took over the management of the Clinic for Nuclear Medicine .

Work and honors

Börner published over 400 papers and focused on diseases of the thyroid gland and their therapy. He also published on osteoporosis diagnostics and radiation protection , as well as short-lived radionuclides and their diagnostic application. He was co-editor of the journal "Radiation Protection in Research and Practice" and co-editor of the journal "Nuklearmedizin". He was also a founding member of the Bavarian, German and European Society for Nuclear Medicine.

In 1969 Börner was honored with the Paul Martini Prize for his work . He was also awarded the first Georg von Hevesy Medal by the German Society for Nuclear Medicine in 2002 for his life's work . Börner was also a bearer of the Bavarian Order of Merit (1986). In 2010 he received honorary membership of the Bavarian Society for Nuclear Medicine.
