The Gallo-Roman temple at Oberlauchringen is a temple from the Gallo-Roman era and is located below the Küssaburg in the Klettgaumulde on the municipality of Oberlauchringen in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The Freiburg historian Heinrich Schreiber began in the "Unter der Burgsteig" area, where Roman artefacts were repeatedly encountered, around 1844 with "abrasions", and in 1889 and 1896/1898 further explorations followed . In 1963, Roman findings were also observed when a water pipe was being built , but it was only when aerial archaeologist Otto Braasch carried out a flight in the summer of 1992 that conclusive images of the walls could be obtained.

location

The Heidegger Hof ( Heidenäcker ) in Klettgau, 2002

The location is close already on the Tabula Peutingeriana registered Roman road that from Vindonissa ( Windisch ) Coming at Tenedo ( Zurzach ) the Rhenus ( Rhine crossed) and Iuliomagus ( Schleitheim on to) the Danube and the Neckar led. Since the existence of the plant was endangered by deep plowing, it was decided to excavate for a limited time and space.

environment

Finds from the Hallstatt and Latène times have already been made in the neighboring Geißlinger district . The so-called Heidenschlössle at the Heideggerhof came from Roman times . During an excavation carried out in 1795, a villa-like building measuring around 40 × 40 m was discovered, some of which had underfloor heating . In addition to brick stamps of the XI. and XXI. Legion and a troop ( cohort ) that cannot be defined more precisely were found among other things numerous coins. The temple is on the opposite side of federal highway 34 .

Findings and temporal determinations

In the summer of 1995, the facility was uncovered under the direction of archaeologist Jürgen Trumm . Mechanical removal and a subsequent subgrade soon gave a picture of the complex, which was represented by three square wall sections surrounding each other. The first square measures 5.50 × 5.80 m. A second one was later built around this, measuring 7.20 × 6.60 m. A third building was built around these two, which has the considerable dimensions of 17.30 × 18 m.

Coins and relief sigillates were found on the ground . Coins have been dated with a bronze coinage of Vespasian and a plated denarius of Caracalla , among others . The Sigillata are products of Germanus from La Graufesenque , as well as the manufactories of Banassac , Lezoux , Heiligenberg and Ittenweiler . Pre-Flavian finds are as little available as late antique material. A reed sandstone was discovered, which was probably related to the temple shrine.

Monument protection

The ground monument is protected as a registered cultural monument within the meaning of the Monument Protection Act of the State of Baden-Württemberg (DSchG) . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.

Situation today

After the excavation, the area was covered again and leveled; agriculture today uses the area only as meadow. The Oberlauchringen bypass currently under construction does not touch the area around the temple.
