Wilhelm Bondzio
Wilhelm Bondzio (* 22. October 1929 , † 2017 ) was a German germanistischer linguist with a focus on valence theory .
Life
Wilhelm Bondzio, born in 1929, worked as a new teacher for three years between 1947 and 1950 . In 1950 he began studying German, Nordic and linguistics. In 1958 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of language . The habilitation took place in 1967 with a synchronistic thesis on nominal syntax. Afterwards he was full professor and head of the chair for German language at the Humboldt University in Berlin , section German studies. He was one of the initiators of the linguistic working group at Humboldt University.
While his main focus was initially on the history of science and the history of medieval literature, valence eventually developed into his specialty. He was one of the founders of the valence theory in the GDR . He also published several books on the history of literature. In essays he devoted himself to grammar , semantics , the history of language , the contrastive comparison of languages and the history of linguistics and German studies. The member of the main board of the CDU also represented the Christian faith externally.
Quotes
Bondzio about his work
“As before, it is important to me to explain theoretical views on sufficient empirical material. Although I limit myself to the German language, my theoretical claim goes beyond it and is aimed at more universal validity. This is linked to the intention to stay in critical contact with other theories of valence and grammar. With the emphasis on semantic aspects and with its grammatical-syntactic model, the semantic valence theory is close to functional grammar and the European tradition of language and grammar theory, which can also be seen from the adherence to tried and tested classical grammatical terms. "
Journal for German studies on Bondzio's work
“At a time when there was a risk of neglecting meaning research, Bondzio found his own way of relating semantics and grammar to one another with his consistently semantically well-founded view of the valence relationships and the semantic-logical basis of the syntactic structures to explain."
