Wilhelm Burmann

Wilhelm Burmann (born April 3, 1939 in Oberhausen ; † March 30, 2020 in New York City ) was a German ballet dancer , ballet master and ballet teacher.

Life

Wilhelm Burmann grew up on a farm near Oberhausen. He started dancing at the age of 15. He was able to establish himself as a dancer in Germany; He danced for the Frankfurt Ballet , the Stuttgart Ballet and the Grand Théâtre de Genève, among others . After emigrating to the United States, he danced for the New York City Ballet , New Jersey Ballet and the Pennsylvania Ballet before ending his active dance career in 1977.

As a ballet master, he worked for the Washington Ballet and Ballet du Nord, among others. From 1984 until his death in 2020 he worked as a ballet teacher at various dance schools, including Harkness Ballet and the Melissa Hayden School of Ballet. His most famous students include the dancers Alessandra Ferri , Julio Bocca , Maria Kowroski , Wendy Whelan , Alexandra Ansanelli , Ángel Corella and Michele Wiles .

Burmann was in a relationship with the Cuban ballet dancer Alfonso Catá for years until his death in 1990, caused by a brain tumor . On March 30, 2020 Burmann died at the age of 80 years during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States to kidney failure - in connection with a SARS-CoV-2 infection - Mount Sinai Hospital West. He had suffered from previous illnesses for years.
