Wilhelm Coddaeus also: Willem Kodde, Guilielmus Jacobus van der Codde ; (* February 8, 1574 in Leiden ; † after 1625) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

The son of Jacob van der Codde, apparently grew up in Rijnsburg where his parents originally lived. On February 22, 1588, he enrolled at the University of Leiden to study literature. To this end, he dealt with the ancient languages and theological questions. Under Lucas Trelcatius in 1597 he defended the treatise de bonis operibus , in 1598 the treatise de cognitione Dei naturali et revelata and in 1600 the treatise de legitima vocatione et ordine ministrorum in ecclesia . Under Franz Junius the Elder , he disputed the treatise de sacrae scripturae auctoritate in 1596 and de resurrectione Christi in 1599 . After completing his studies, he went into the school service, as a speech de nativitate Christi emphasizes him as vice principal of the Leiden trivial school.

On August 8, 1601, he was appointed associate professor of the Hebrew language at the Leiden University and on November 10, 1602, he took over the full professorship of the subject. In this capacity he was elected rector of the Alma Mater in 1616 . But he soon became embroiled in the religious disputes of his day. As a supporter of Jacobus Arminius , he was suspended in 1619 and dismissed on February 10, 1621, because he refused to enforce the resolutions of the Dordrecht Synod and was therefore subjected to some matters that were untrue. Nothing is known about his later life. In 1625 he is said to have been alive.
