Johann Wilhelm Cramer , also William Cramer or Wilhelm Kramer (baptized June 2, 1746 in Mannheim ; † October 5, 1799 in London , England) was a German violinist and conductor .

Life

Wilhelm Cramer, son of Johann Jacob Cramer and Sybilla Catharina Gentes, was employed as a violinist by the electoral court orchestra. He was the most important performing artist of the Mannheim School and in 1772 he was solo violinist in the electoral court orchestra. At the instigation of Johann Christian Bach , he went to London with his family in 1773, where he conducted court concerts and, among other things, became conductor of the orchestra of the Italian opera. In addition, he conducted the Concerts of Antient Music , a series of concerts with works that were at least 20 years old, as well as the annual concerts of the "Musical Fund", later the "Royal Society of Musicians".

One son was the pianist Johann Baptist Cramer , another the composer Franz Cramer .
