Wilhelm Gerard Burgers (born August 16, 1897 in Arnhem , † September 24, 1988 ) was a Dutch physicist .

biography

Like his brother Johannes Burgers , Wilhelm Burgers worked at the Technical University of Delft . Among other things, he dealt with relocations and is sometimes - wrongly - seen as the father of the Burgersvector . This term came about with the help of his brother, who came up with it through his study of vortices in fluid mechanics . In his farewell speech, Wilhelm Burgers called himself “the uncle of the Burgersvector”.

In 1963, Burgers received the Gilles Holstprijs , a KNAW award that is awarded every four years to Dutch researchers working in the intermediate field of physics and chemistry.

In the former building of the technical materials science on the Rotterdamseweg in Delft there was - until the demolition of the building in 2006 - a plaque for burgers.
