Wilhelm Haas (librarian)

Wilhelm Haas (born May 25, 1842 in Neutitschein , † January 24, 1918 in Vienna ) was an Austrian librarian . He was director of the University Library in Vienna, where he did a great job of cataloging .

Life

Haas came to study mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1874 he became a trainee at the University Library in Vienna, in 1881 a scriptor and in 1884 a curator . During this time he demonstrated his organizational skills, especially when the library moved in 1884.

Haas was appointed director of the Graz University Library on September 14, 1885 . There, too, he was able to contribute his organizational skills and was awarded the title of Government Councilor in 1897 . On June 22, 1903, the library commission of the Vienna University proposed Haas to succeed Grassauer as the library director. On July 7, 1903, the Ministry accepted this proposal and appointed Haas director. Haas was given the character of a councilor .

Haas did a great job cataloging the Vienna University Library. He introduced printed catalogs in place of handwritten catalogs and in 1903 had the catalog room enlarged. He also had a two-story gallery built for reference works. In 1905 he began work on a keyword catalog. During his tenure, he could no longer achieve the enlargement of the library space. He was retired on September 30, 1910 .

Honors

Haas was holder of the title government advisor and councilor . He also wore the anniversary cross and the anniversary commemorative medal for civilian state officials. In 1905 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class and in 1910 was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order .
