Wilhelm Heß (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Heß (* 1846 in Bavaria ; † September 25, 1916 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian architect . Wilhelm Heß was an important representative of the Wörthersee architecture and director of the Klagenfurt construction and arts and crafts school.

Life

Wilhelm Hess came from southern Germany and allegedly took part in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 as a 14-year-old volunteer . Little is known about his past life.

He later worked at the commercial drawing and modeling school in Klagenfurt , which was founded in 1871 . When it was converted into a commercial advanced training school in 1883, the 37-year-old architect Hess became its director. Under him, the commercial technical school system enjoyed a positive upswing.

From 1889 the educational establishment was called the State Crafts School, and from the beginning of the 1907/08 school year it was called the Construction and Crafts School. Hess was still the director at the time. He taught all the time and even baugewerbliches technical drawing and had next to the line of the workshops held. In 1911 this type of school was reformed again: the construction and craft school moved to Villach .

Since the school principal probably turned 65 that year, he probably retired. He also belonged to the Klagenfurt municipal council for a long time.

Honors

For his services, he was awarded the title of "Government Councilor " and earlier the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . The Carinthian industrial and trade association made Hess an honorary member.

family

Wilhelm Heß was already a widower when he died on September 25, 1916 in Sariastrasse in Klagenfurt. The burial took place according to the evangelical rite at the municipal cemetery Annabichl . His daughter Johanna had married the Carinthian sculptor Jakob Wald in 1902 , who taught at the crafts school and died in 1903.
