Wilhelm Herschel (lawyer)

Wilhelm Herschel (born October 17, 1895 in Bonn , † January 7, 1986 in Bad Honnef ) was a German lawyer.

Career

Herschel was born the son of a farmer. He attended high school and the university in Bonn. He was a teacher at the state college for economics and administration in Düsseldorf and after his doctorate in 1931 at the University of Cologne professor at the vocational education institutes in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main . After completing his habilitation in Halle (Saale) in 1940, he was professor and director of the Institute for Labor Law at the University of Halle until 1946. Herschel's application for membership in the NSDAP , made in October 1937, remained due to his own multiple changes of residence (possibly unfinished), he was a member, block and cell administrator of the National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV) and a member of the Association of National Socialist German Lawyers (BNSDJ) .

After the end of the war, he also worked part-time as a local court advisor and chairman of the regional labor court in Halle. From 1946 he was a ministerial director, first in the Central Office for Labor in the British Zone of Occupation, from 1947 in the Administration for Economics in Frankfurt and from 1949 in the Federal Ministry of Labor . From 1950 Herschel taught as an honorary professor for labor law at the University of Cologne. In 1975 he received the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Numerous treatises on labor law, commercial law and civil law come from Herschel. He is considered to be the father of many post-war labor laws, especially the collective bargaining act.
