Wilhelm Hoyer (geologist)

Wilhelm Hoyer (born May 11, 1854 in Philadelphia , † October 29, 1932 in Hanover ) was a German geologist and engineer .

Life

Wilhelm Hoyer was born in Philadelphia, where his father served as a mission minister. When he was appointed to the Christ Church in Hanover, Hoyer attended what was then Lyceum I (later Ratsgymnasium ) in Hanover. After graduating from high school, he studied civil engineering at the technical university there , later at the technical university in Stuttgart . During his studies he was active in the Corps Slesvico-Holsatia and Stauffia . In 1886 Hoyer passed the government master builder examination. From 1886 to 1887 he was assistant for building sciences at the TH Hannover, 1897 to 1899 railway construction and operations inspector, then consulting engineer for railway and tunnel construction. In 1900 Hoyer became a private lecturer for practical geology at the TH Hannover. In 1904 he was given the title of professor. In 1905 he took over the teaching subject for practical paleontology . In 1908 he was appointed building officer. Shortly before the First World War, Hoyer was commissioned to investigate the geological conditions for the construction of the Baghdad Railway . During the First World War he took over the chairs for railway engineering and bridge construction and also gave lectures on road and tunnel construction. In 1918 he was appointed full honorary professor in the civil engineering department of the TH Hannover.

Hoyer was considered one of the most important experts on the geology of the province of Hanover . His main interest was the natural resources of Lower Saxony, especially potash and crude oil . In the early days of industrial potash mining, Hoyer worked for many companies as an appraiser and consulting geologist. He also made a name for himself in the nascent oil industry in Lower Saxony. In 1929 the Corps Slesvico-Holsatia honored him by making him an honorary boy.
