Wilhelm Spoon

Wilhelmöffel (born February 25, 1871 in Stuttgart , † September 7, 1935 in Weikersheim ) was a German writer and columnist .

Life

Wilhelmöffel alias "Knöpfle" was born in 1871 in Stuttgart's Bohnenviertel , which was the center of wine growers at the time. As for his father, this was the only job he could consider. But it was becoming less and less financially worthwhile, and so in 1907 he bought the Hohenwaldau Kurhotel in Degerloch . There he entertained his guests and entertained them with his never-ending sense of humor. He would rather feel himself valued as a poet than as a host - especially as a dialect poet .

From 1908 to 1914 he wrote in the Stuttgarter Neue Tagblatt , his columns under the title "Views of the wine grower Knöpfle from the Bohnenviertel". He also published it in the " New Yorker Swabian Weekly" for the Swabians who had emigrated. That made him widely known. When the war began in 1914 , however, he fell silent as a writer. He was forced to sell his spa hotel in 1918. He then worked as an employee at the municipal electricity company. In 1920 he resumed his columns in the USA - with long interruptions until 1933. This was no longer successful in Stuttgart.

Wilhelmöffel died unexpectedly in Weikersheim, his wife's hometown, in 1935.

In 1946, in recognition of his services, Admiral-Scheer-Strasse in Degerloch was renamed to "Spoonstrasse" after him.

Works

Wilhelm Löffel's literary work is versatile. In addition to numerous poems, he also wrote plays and biographical stories, mostly in Swabian dialect, but also in High German. The German National Library owns a number of works, the Stuttgart City Archive has a partial estate, and the German Literature Archive Marbach has a folder with his Stuttgart columns. In addition, there are films in the Stuttgart Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations with “Knöpfles” New York contributions. Most of the books are in the Stuttgart State Library, some works in the Stuttgart City Hall Library, the Tübingen University Library, the Reutlingen City Library and the Leipzig German Library .
