Wilhelm Loos (born March 1, 1890 in Butzbach , Hesse ; † April 4, 1952 in Klagenfurt ) was a German civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Life

Wilhelm Loos studied civil engineering at the TH Darmstadt and then worked for construction companies in the Darmstadt and Düsseldorf area before he went to Batavia (Jakarta) in the Dutch East Indies as a consulting engineer in 1922 . In 1930 he received his doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin with a thesis on his experiences in Indonesia ( critical examination of shallow and pile foundations, especially in the port areas of Dutch India ). Then he was assistant to Karl von Terzaghi in Vienna . From 1933 he was managing director of Degebo in Berlin . At first he was the deputy of the managing director Früh, on the initiative of Terzaghi, who was present at a Degebo conference in Freiberg in 1932 and found the organization inadequate, but replaced him in October 1933. At Degebo, he carried out research on road construction as part of the motorway projects. One of his employees was Herbert Breth . Loos led Degebo until July 1939 (his successor was R. Hoffmann) after he had been appointed professor for defense engineering at the end of 1938. After all, he had the rank of government builder. After the war he was supposed to be a professor at the TH Karlsruhe , where he took over the representation of the late Richard Schaffhauser from 1951 , but died shortly afterwards.
