Wilhelm Middeldorf (born March 19, 1858 in Eickel , † August 24, 1911 in Essen ) was a German hydraulic engineer . He was the pioneer of the Emscher regulation.

Life

Wilhelm Middeldorf studied at the Technical University of Hanover Engineering . In 1880 he became a member of the Corps Slesvico-Holsatia . In 1884 he was appointed royal government building supervisor as a candidate for architecture. After being appointed Royal Government Builder in 1889, he was given construction management for the Datteln stretch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal . He then worked for several years in the Ministry of Public Works.

After he had been promoted to hydraulic engineering inspector in Berlin in 1901, he returned to the Ruhr area to plan and implement the Emscher regulation. This included the maintenance and improvement of the receiving water in the area that was sinking due to mining in the Ruhr area, but also the facilities required for cleaning and discharging the urban sewage. The regulation has significantly improved the water quality and significantly reduced the risk of flooding and the associated risk of epidemics. The Emscher regulation served as a model for other river regulation projects. In 1906 Middeldorf was promoted to building councilor. In 1908 he resigned from the civil service in order to be able to fully devote himself to the job of construction director of the Emschergenossenschaft . In this function he was also a deputy member of the waterways advisory board for the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Lippewasserstraße .

Due to his special expertise, Middeldorf acted as a judge of the competition for the drainage of the Itterbach area and held an urban development course at RWTH Aachen University . Middeldorf could no longer see the completion of the Emscher regulation he had planned when he died in 1911 at the age of 53. He was buried in the old Protestant cemetery on Lohofstrasse in Herne-Eickel.
