Wilhelm Mohr (journalist)
Wilhelm Mohr (born December 3, 1838 in Münstereifel , † November 25, 1888 in Obernigk in Silesia ) was a German journalist and as such a long-time employee of the Kölnische Zeitung .
Life
Wilhelm Mohr was born the son of a school teacher, studied in Bonn theology , but switched after passing the first test for Philology and a doctorate in 1863 on Sophocles . In 1864 he found a job as a teacher at the Marzellengymnasium in Cologne .
His art-critical and musical talent was the reason for a closer connection with the "Kölnische Zeitung", as a result of which he gave up his official position in 1868 in order to devote his energies exclusively to this newspaper from now on. His articles published there (marked by a post horn) indicated his talent as a writer.
He stayed as a reporter in Rome and Florence from 1869 to 1871 , in Spain from 1874/1875 , where he took part in the campaigns against the Carlist in the entourage of King Alfonso , and from where he made a foray along the west coast of Morocco in 1875 .
In August 1876 he wrote letters from a patron saint to the Kölnische Zeitung from Bayreuth . He saw Morocco again the following year, accompanied by a German embassy, and delivered colorful descriptions from the residence of Sultan Mulai al-Hassan I ( A journey into barbarism ).
From the end of 1877 to the beginning of 1879 he stayed in Rome again, and then moved to Berlin , whose ambition in all areas he vividly described in letters.
Wilhelm Mohr visited America in 1883 to attend the opening of the Northern Pacific Railway as a representative of the Kölnische Zeitung, then stayed again for a year in Italy ( Turin exhibition in 1884), then took a longer stay in Paris , visited London and reported on the Antwerp World Exhibition in 1885 . These exhibition reports allowed the plan to mature in him to draw the entire German industry into the area of his representation.
His activity in this direction was, however, after promised beginnings inhibited by an unexpectedly occurring brain ailment, against which he sought a cure in vain in the sanatorium in Obernigk.
