Wilhelm Nyssen

Wilhelm Nyssen (born April 19, 1925 ; † July 16, 1994 in Cologne ) was a Catholic theologian , long-time university pastor and honorary professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

After the study of philosophy and theology at the University of Freiburg , which he 1954 with the graduation to the Dr. Phil. Graduated from Max Müller , Wilhelm Nyssen was ordained priest in 1956 . For several years he worked as a chaplain in various parishes in Cologne.

Nyssen became a university pastor in 1957 and in the mid-1960s designed the community center, the dormitories and above all the church of the university community and built them in an idiosyncratic form together with the Paderborn sculptor Josef Rikus and the architect Heinz Buchmann . During his long tenure in office, he shaped generations of students whose feeling of belonging to the university community lasted for years. Many people from all over the world still feel connected to this church today.

From 1965 he held a teaching position for Byzantine Studies at Cologne University, in 1980 he was appointed honorary professor.

Nyssen succeeded in bringing many famous thinkers to lecture at the university community, such as Josef Pieper , Heinrich Böll and Joseph Ratzinger , with whom he was on friendly terms, as well as bishops, politicians, authors , professors and scientists from all disciplines.

Nyssen died in 1994 at the age of 69 and was buried in the family grave at the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. G, between lit. E + F).
