Wilhelm Pertsch (born April 19, 1832 in Coburg , † August 17, 1899 in Gotha ) was a German librarian and orientalist.

life and work

Wilhelm Pertsch studied the oriental language in Berlin and Tübingen and then went on a nine-month study trip to Paris, London and Oxford. In October 1855 he began working at the Gotha ducal library at Friedenstein Castle , which marked the beginning of his almost 25 years of work on the 3300 oriental manuscripts in the Gotha library, which he cataloged in eight volumes and made accessible to science. In addition, Pertsch edited the Persian and Turkish manuscripts of the Prussian State Library in Berlin .

In 1874 Pertsch took over the management of the Münzkabinett in Gotha. His excellent language skills and his diligence in identifying and describing the coins were of inestimable advantage of his work in the numismatic field. He also knew how to establish the connection between coin finds and historical statements.

In 1879 he was appointed senior librarian. In 1883 he was appointed director of the scientific institutes at Schloss Friedenstein. From 1888 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig . He was also a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . The importance of Wilhelm Pertsch's scientific work results primarily from his exemplary catalogs of oriental manuscripts in Gotha and Berlin.

Wilhelm Pertsch found his final resting place in Gotha Cemetery IV . When it was cleared in 1951, Pertsch's gravestone was secured, which is now in the grove of honor in the main cemetery .
