Ehwald was an active member of the Gotha History Society. His work on Ovid's manuscripts found in the Gotha library and his descriptions of the manuscripts and incunabula in the Gotha high school library were of particular importance . In addition, he did intensive research on the Laocoon saga , both on the philological and archaeological sources. In addition, he wrote many memorial speeches and memorial writings.
