Wilhelm Pfanhauser senior (born May 21, 1843 in Vienna ; † June 11, 1923 in Spital am Semmering ) was an Austrian electroplating technician and entrepreneur.

The son of the academic painter Franz Pfanhauser attended secondary school, but due to the sudden death of his father, he lacked the means to study at the technical university.

Pfanhauser founded his first business on February 1, 1873 in Vienna with a starting capital of 314 guilders , which he had received from his mother, which consisted of a small room as a sales room, living room and kitchen, and published his first on April 1, 1873 Price list for trading in potassium cyanide, scratching brushes and other auxiliary items for electroplaters.

Over the next few years he developed ready-made nickel salts for a white, adhesive electrolytic nickel plating and in 1878 published a generally understandable book about the electroplating of metals.

In 1881 Georg Langbein also opened an electroplating factory in Germany. Pfanhauser had been on the market for almost 10 years, but it was clear to him - also in view of the constant lack of money - that he should not underestimate his competitors. In order not to lose German customers, he founded a branch in Nuremberg , which was later relocated to Berlin . Pfanhauser's son Wilhelm Pfanhauser junior , who had studied electrochemistry in Darmstadt, later took over this Berlin branch. It was he who began negotiations with Langbein, the largest and most bitter competitor, in 1906, which culminated in 1907 with the establishment of the Langbein-Pfanhauser works in Leipzig .
