From 1808 to 1812 he completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Husum . From 1813 to 1820 he worked as a pharmacist in Oldenburg in Holstein and Schwerin , before giving up his old profession and went with Nicolaus Peters from Flensburg to the art academy in Dresden, where he studied painting in Dresden .
