Wilhelm Schmidt (born August 18, 1898 in Obersdorf , Siegen district; † September 13, 1965 there ) was a German dialect poet.

Life

Wilhelm Schmidt, the third child of the machinist Jakob Schmidt from Rittershausen in the Dill district, attended elementary school in his birthplace Obersdorf. He was a school friend of the politician Fritz Müller . Schmidt learned the profession of technical draftsman at A. u. H. Oechelhäuser in Siegen. He worked in the Siegerland ore mines as a dump boy, mountain runner and tuscher of the ant mine . After serving in the First World War , he was a miner until he gave up for health reasons in 1922. He had to give up other jobs as an unskilled worker and magazine administrator due to illness. From 1939 to 1944 he was again a soldier in World War II .

Schmidt became known as a dialect poet. The Siegerland writer Lothar Irle described him as a “subtle poet and narrator in Siegerland dialect”. Schmidt was also a permanent employee of the Siegener Zeitung . In 1934 he wrote a poem to confer honorary citizenship on Chancellor Adolf Hitler in Obersdorf.

Wilhelm Schmidt was married to Hedwig geb. Gaumann; the marriage had four children.

He was the namesake of Wilhelm-Schmidt-Weg in Obersdorf since 2013 ; due to his membership in the NSDAP (not documented; joined around 1940) the naming was withdrawn.
