The Ameise mine was an iron ore mine in the Siegen district of Eisern in the Siegerland ore district . The mine, whose industrial era began comparatively late, was on the northern slope in the upper Leimbach valley on the edge of the Iron District.

Aisle means

The mine was built on two veins . The ant east corridor was up to 250 m long; on the bottom of the tunnel it was 220 m. At a depth of 45 m , the mean was up to 7 m thick. On the ninth floor of the walk was very short, developed deep but again increase until on the 16th floor was penetrated in 990 m depth, becoming unbauwürdig. The ant north-south corridor was up to 250 m long on the 9th level and between 2 and 10 m thick. The lower part was not worth building. Spat and brown iron stone were mined .

A pit ant was already mentioned in 1562, but its dismantling may be older. It was not mentioned again until 1835, and in that year it was muted again . Mining took place at the beginning of the 19th century through several day shafts and tunnels. The first die was created in 1858. In 1865 a deep tunnel was created in the Hitschelsbachtal, through which the passage center was encountered at a depth of 44 m. In 1881 the then very insignificant company was closed. This was not resumed until 1905. In the upper Leimbachtal was Theresa studs being cut. In 1908 the first shaft was built. This had a depth of 445.3 m and was constructed as a blind shaft. He reached the following depths:

  • 1909: 45 m
  • 1911: 190 m
  • 1916: 350 m
  • 1921: 445 m

A small roasting plant was built in front of the tunnel in 1909 , which was expanded in 1910 and 1917 or replaced by larger plants. In addition, a mine railway was laid down to the Unterste Martinshardt mine further down in the valley. Also in 1917 a cable car was built, the hanging gates of which led over the Leimbachtal and the Rosterberg towards Eintracht. In the same year, the old shaft was replaced by shaft II with a depth of 885.2 m and a diameter of 4.2 m. In 1915 the mine became the property of the Rheinische Stahlwerke , who modernized the mine. In 1917 353 members of the staff worked in the mine.

year Delivery rate
1913 53,940 t
1917 68,055 t
1926 70,800 t
1930 63,786 t

On April 28, 1926, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the mine for the war dead.

Operations ceased in 1931, and a year later the breakthrough took place in the Eisernhardter Tiefbau mine , which was about two kilometers southwest of the mine. The connection of the two pits followed in 1933. Another breakthrough was completed five years later. Wet drilling was also introduced in the mine in the 1930s so that underground work was no longer so dusty. Work began in 1938 on the daytime facilities of the Eisernhardter Tiefbau mine . In 1931, 280 employees worked in the mine, until 1940 1.362 million tons of iron ore were mined. The breakthrough to the Mocke mine followed on September 4, 1952 . From 1953 the Ameise mine belonged to Erzbergbau Siegerland AG . A 100.03 m deep blind shaft was built from 1954 and led from the 14th or 890 m level to the 16th level to a total depth of 990 m. In November 1956, production in the Ameise mine field was stopped and the mine finally abandoned. The headframe was demolished in 1958. The last buildings were demolished in the late 1980s.

In 2009, plans were drawn up for the use of pit water by the nearby industrial area. The measured water inflow in 1953 was 625 l / min. The temperatures were at a depth of 290 m 12.2-13.3 ° C and at 890 m depth 21.3 ° C; 30,000 m³ of water could be used.

The access to the Theresienstollen has been provided with a concrete closure and a passage for bats over the past few years.

Attached pits

The mine entered into the largest network with the Eisernhardter Tiefbau composite mine in 1939. The other pits were:

  • The Adelheid mine in Eisern belonged to the Ameise mine . Ore was mined there between 1865 and 1881.
  • The Ameise II pit area was right next to the Ameise pit area and was muted to copper in 1877.
  • Mocke in Siegen-Kaan-Marienborn was muted in 1847. It belonged to Ameise and later to Eisernhardter Tiefbau and was not shut down until December 31, 1957.
  • New Theresia in Siegen (Leimbach) from 1905
  • The Prince Friedrich mine in Obersdorf came to the ant after its closure in 1903 .
