Wilhelm Steinhaus

(August) Wilhelm Steinhaus (born April 30, 1884 in Barmen ; † August 22, 1970 in Berlin ) was an expert in physical metallurgy.

Live and act

As the son of Rector Wilhelm Steinhaus, he studied mathematics, physics and chemistry in Marburg from 1903–05 and then probably continued in Göttingen. During his studies he became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - connections Frankonia Marburg (1887) and fraternity Germania Göttingen (1905). Around 1910 he received his doctorate with studies on the problem of the equation of state .

In 1912 he became a research assistant at the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR), laboratory manager in 1924, department director in 1943 and acting president in 1945. In 1932 Robert Ochsenfeld was briefly his intern in the magnetic laboratory. In 1939 he researched as an expert in physical metallurgy in Eckernförde on torpedo pistols (torpedo detonators).

In 1945 he became president of the German Office for Weights and Measures and in 1949 adjunct professor. From the beginning of 1955 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin.
