Karl Wilhelm Sudhaus (born June 28, 1827 in Dortmund ; † August 12, 1915 ) was a German engineer . He was chairman of the academic hut association and a member of the founding board of the association of German engineers (VDI).

Life

Wilhelm Sudhaus was born the eldest of three sons of a carpenter. His father died when the brewhouse had not yet turned fourteen. One of his father's brothers initially wanted to train him as a carpenter in his company, another of his father's brothers believed that training as an engraver would be more promising, so he brought him to the Kissing & Möllmann company in Iserlohn . During this time, Sudhaus attempted to improve his previously inadequate schooling through private lessons. He later attended the Hagen trade school and, after a few interruptions, the Royal Trade Institute in Berlin. He joined the Academic Association Hut in his first winter semester. In the spring of 1852, the brewhouse was elected chairman. He held this office until the end of the summer semester of 1854. After completing his studies, Sudhaus was initially hired as an assistant draftsman before he became a Royal Prussian fitter at the Gleiwitz Ironworks Office . In the spring of 1856 he got a job with the Westfalia-Hütte in Lünen . With financial reasons given, he stayed away from the VDI founding meeting in May 1856 in Alexisbad . Since Sudhaus had already declared his accession to the VDI in advance, he received membership card No. 7. Along with Friedrich Euler , Franz Grashof and Richard Peters , he became a member of the VDI founding board. Together with Peters, Sudhaus initiated the founding of the Westphalian district association of the VDI in 1856 and was initially its chairman. Sudhaus had also drawn up the statutes of the district association.

Career changes led the brewhouse to Meppen , Trier , Haspe , Isselburg and Duisburg-Hochfeld before he became director of the Aplerbecker Hütte in May 1867 , and he managed the blast furnace operation until 1886. In Aplerbeck, the brewhouse was also active in local politics and temporarily held the office of mayor . From 1886 to 1896 he headed the Mathildenhütte in Harzburg . An illness that made surgery necessary ended his professional career in the fall of 1896.

In June 1906, Sudhaus was made an honorary member at the 47th VDI General Assembly in Berlin on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the association . In August 1915 he died of a stroke.

Sudhaus was married and the father of three daughters.
