Carl Friedrich Euler (born October 20, 1823 in Sulzbach / Saar , † March 27, 1891 in Kaiserslautern ) was a German engineer. He founded the Eisenwerke Kaiserslautern (EWK) and the important technical associations AV Hütte and Association of German Engineers (VDI).

life and work

Friedrich Euler received his training at the Royal Prussian Trade Institute Berlin , a predecessor of the TU Berlin . There he was one of the founders of the " Association of the Zöglinge des Königlichen Gewerbeinstitutes " in 1846 , which in 1847 was renamed "Hut".

The Association of German Engineers was founded on May 12, 1856 in Alexisbad ( Harz ) on the occasion of a trip to the 10th Foundation Festival of the hut . In 1856, 1857, 1878 and 1881 he was elected chairman of the VDI. The association made him an honorary member in 1888.

Since 1851, the engineer worked as overseer in Freiherrlich Gienanthschen smelter in Hochstein employed. In 1854 he took over the management of the Gienanth ironworks in Trippstadt .

On his initiative, the Kaiserslautern ironworks was founded as a stock corporation in September 1864 . As early as 1877, the company was recognized for its commercial achievements. Until the middle of the 20th century, the focus was on iron and steel structures for the building industry and bridge construction (since 1872). In 1868 the production of Meidinger ovens was started, a branch of the company that has also produced central heating systems and heating systems since 1874.

Friedrich Euler was a son of the pastor Adolf Euler. He had two daughters, one of the sons-in-law was the architect Karl Spatz . Euler's relatives include the Nobel Prize winners Hans von Euler-Chelpin and Ulf von Euler, as well as the pietist Philip Jakob Spener on his mother's side . The gymnastics teacher and writer Carl Philipp Euler (1828–1901) is his younger brother.
