Wilhelm Theodor Oscar Casselmann (born August 1, 1820 in Rinteln , † February 15, 1872 in Wiesbaden ) was a high school teacher and member of the state parliament of the Duchy of Nassau .

Life

His father was the higher court director and government secretary Alexander Philipp Casselmann (born November 22, 1785 - † December 8, 1854) and his grandfather the criminal judge Philipp Ludwig Casselmann.

After visiting the school in Rinteln he studied 1839-1843 mathematics and science at the universities of Berlin, Göttingen and Marburg with Robert Bunsen , where he in August 1843 with the work over the galvanic zinc carbon chain to Dr. phil. PhD. He researched coal arc lamps and reported in Poggendorfs Annalen in 1844 that soaking the coals with various solutions, e.g. B. with boric acid solution , calm the arc. A volatile substance also significantly reduces the voltage to be applied. After he had also passed the exam as a high school teacher, he was both a private lecturer in physics, meteorology and technology at the University of Marburg, and a teacher of mathematics, physics and chemistry at the local high school. From Easter 1846 he taught chemistry at the newly founded Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden, from 1863 as a professor.

He also taught at the Nassau Military Academy and made contributions to the galvanic zinc-carbon chain. From 1866 he reported in the journal for analytical chemistry published by Carl Remigius Fresenius on the advances in inorganic chemistry.
