Wilhelm Wenk

Wilhelm (Willi) Wenk (born April 11, 1890 in Riehen ; † November 5, 1956 in Winterthur ; resident in Riehen) was a Swiss painter , wood cutter and drawing teacher .

life and work

Wilhelm Wenk studied after an apprenticeship as a carpenter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was a student of Peter Halm .

In 1914 Wenk was drafted into active service. After he had obtained the federal drawing teaching license in 1916, he went on study trips to Sweden, Norway, Dalmatia, Italy, Greece, southern France and Paris.

Wenk received a federal art grant in 1919 and 1928 .

He married Elise nee Zimmermann in 1921. They had a daughter together (* 1927). From 1926 they lived in Riehen, where they had a studio house built by Paul Artaria and Hans Schmidt . Wenk was friends with Otto Roos , among others .

From 1939 to 1954 Wenk taught drawing lessons at various Basel schools.

In addition to his many landscapes, Wenk created woodcuts, which he primarily dedicated to farmers, craftsmen and workers. Wenk was a co-founder of the Swiss section Xylon .

As a non-party, Wenk was elected to the municipal council of Riehen in 1951.
