Wilhelm von Bernewitz

Karl Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Bernewitz (born October 10, 1808 in Braunschweig ; † December 15, 1878 ibid) was a German officer who was in command of the Duke of Braunschweig Infantry Regiment from 1855 to 1861 and then major general and brigade commander .

Life

Von Bernewitz was born as the son of Johann Heinrich Carl von Bernewitz , who later became the town commander of the garrison , and his wife Franziska Bodenstaff (1773–1846) in Braunschweig.

Military career

On March 7, 1825, he entered the military as a cadet . On May 1, 1826, he was appointed Portepee Ensign of the Guard Grenadier Battalion and on May 2, 1827, Ensign. He switched to the 2nd Line Infantry Regiment on May 24th. On September 29, 1830 he was promoted to second lieutenant and came to the 2nd Battalion on October 21, where he was Premier Lieutenant on February 12, 1834 and a battalion adjutant on October 28, 1835. Von Bernewitz became captain of the 3rd battalion on September 29, 1841 and chief of the 4th company of the 1st battalion on October 15, 1843. In the years 1848/49 he took part in the war against Denmark . On February 15, 1851, von Bernewitz was promoted to major and initially commander of the 1st Landwehr Battalion, then on April 23, 1852, commander of the Leib Battalion and finally on February 16, 1855 of the entire Duke Braunschweig Infantry Regiment. Here he was promoted to lieutenant colonel shortly afterwards on March 19. Since April 23, 1856 he was also the Brunswick Chamberlain and was appointed colonel in September of that year. He was appointed colonel on April 25, 1858. On December 12, 1861, he was promoted to major general and brigade commander and took his retirement on October 3, 1867.

family

Von Bernewitz was married to Auguste Bosse (1815-1880) since June 30, 1835. From this marriage came Karl Emil Wilhelm Arthur Freiherr von Bernewitz (1842-1920). His older brothers were the barons Ernst August Wilhelm (1798–1851), Adolf Wilhelm Ferdinand (1802–1859) and Ludwig Hermann Alexander (1804–1847) von Bernewitz.
