William of Montferrat (Jaffa and Askalon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Long Sword of Montferrat (Italian: Guglielmo Lungaspada , Latin: Willelmus Longaspatha ; * between 1135 and 1145; † 1177 ), was a count of Jaffa and Ascalon in the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

He was the eldest son of Wilhelm V († 1191), Margrave of Montferrat from the house of the Aleramides and Judith of Austria from the house of the Babenbergs, thus great-grandson of Emperor Heinrich IV. He was the older brother of Konrad and Bonifatius and Rainer .

The ordinal number "VII." Was assigned to him not because he would have been the seventh Margrave of Montferrat named Wilhelm, but because he is the seventh bearer of the name Wilhelm in the house of the Aleramides. Wilhelm Longaspatha died before his father. As the son of Wilhelm V, he is occasionally referred to as Wilhelm VI. counted. His father Wilhelm V is the sixth Wilhelm von Haus der Aleramiden, also called Wilhelm VI. counted.

In 1176 he was, probably on the proposal of King Louis VII of France , of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem and his regent Count Raimund III. selected by Tripoli as husband for Balduin's eldest sister Sibylle . Baldwin IV was childless and suffered from leprosy, which is why it was foreseeable that Sibylle and, by virtue of her right, her husband would inherit the throne of the Kingdom of Jerusalem . In October 1176 he reached Sidon and married Sibylle. Because of his marriage, Wilhelm was enfeoffed with the counties of Jaffa and Askalon, traditionally due to the Crown Prince . Wilhelm did not ascend the throne because he died of malaria shortly after the wedding, at the latest in 1177 . However, Sibylle was at this time with William's son, the future king Baldwin V pregnant.

His widow married the western French nobleman Guido von Lusignan in 1180 , who, like him, was enfeoffed with Jaffa and Ascalon and finally rose to become king of Jerusalem in 1186.
