Karl Wilhelm von Seeler was born on March 6, 1861 as the second of three sons of the German-born military doctor Friedrich von Seeler, who was ennobled by the Tsar, and his wife Amalie in Riga , Livonia . In order to avoid confusion with the youngest brother, who was also called Carl, he was called by his middle name, mostly in the Baltic form "Willa". He became a half-orphan at the age of eight.

Together with his brothers Nikolai and Carl Friedrich, he first attended the private school of his aunt Louise Vogt, then the Gouvernements-Gymnasium in Riga and studied law at the University of Dorpat from 1882 to 1886 , where he received his doctorate in 1896 as Doctor Jurisprudentiae , which he formed from 1887 until 1890 in Berlin , then in Uppsala in Sweden. At the University of Dorpat he joined the Fraternitas Rigensis student association and held the position of “First Chargiert”.

From 1891 to 1895 he was a lecturer and then a full professor at the universities of Charkow , Kiev , Saint Petersburg and Berlin . As an aristocrat of German origin, he was transferred to Tomsk in Siberia for some time in 1916 , where he retired. In 1920 he became professor of law at the University of Rome and in 1921 at the University of Dorpat. He died here on October 27, 1925 and was buried in a university grave of honor.

Wilhelm von Seeler was both Dr. jur. according to German and Russian law. In Russia, this title was awarded only seven times for outstanding scientific achievements. He was awarded the state gold medal. His specialty was Roman law , Baltic private law and employee insurance.
