Willard Deason

Willard "Bill" Deason (born January 3, 1905 in Stockdale, Texas ; died February 23, 1997 in Austin, Texas ) was an American lawyer and entrepreneur. From 1965 to 1975 he was a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission regulator .

Life

Willard Deason was born the fourth of six children to Horace and Nettie Key Deason. He attended Stockdale High School until 1922. He then studied until 1930 at Southwest Texas State Teachers College (SWSTC), now Texas State University . In college he was a roommate of the future US President Lyndon B. Johnson .

After graduation, he taught at Alamo Heights Junior High School in San Antonio. He also studied law and graduated in 1934 with an LL.B. He first worked as a lawyer for the Federal Land Bank. From August 1935 he was employed in a senior position at the National Youth Administration in Austin. After the attack on Pearl Harbor , Deason was drafted into the military in March 1942 and served in the Navy's personnel department. He finished his army service in the rank of commander.

After the war he worked from March 1946 to December 1948 for the radio station KTBC in Austin. In 1949 he founded the radio station KVET with other veterans in Austin . Deason took over the management and program direction. Later he acquired the shares of the other co-owners. Deason sold the radio station to Roy Butler in July 1965. He has also worked for the Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Radio Association and other non-profit organizations.

On August 18, 1965, President Johnson nominated his friend Deason for the seat of Everett Hutchinson on the Interstate Commerce Commission for the remainder of the term ending December 31, 1965, and thereafter until December 31, 1972. Deason had none at that time Transportation experience. The Senate was confirmed on September 7, 1965, and he took office the following day. Another nomination took place in 1972/73 for a term until December 31, 1979. On July 31, 1975, he retired. His successor was Betty Jo Christian .

Willard Deason had been married to Jeanne Fitzpatrick (1917-2000) since 1945 and had two children. His best man was Lyndon B. Johnson.
