Wim ter Burg

Willem "Wim" ter Burg (born April 10, 1914 in Utrecht ( Netherlands ), † September 17, 1995 in Maarn (Netherlands)) was a Dutch composer , church musician , choir conductor and music teacher.

Life

Wim ter Burg received a broad musical education. He studied school music, organ, choir conducting and flute. In 1937 he finished his studies with state diplomas in organ and choir conducting.

The diversity of his training corresponds to his various activities: from 1935 to 1952 he worked as an organist and choir director in different places. In 1952 he went to Amsterdam and worked there as a high school teacher and in the direction of the folk music school. From 1958 to 1960 ter Burg was head of the education department of the Conservatory of Brabant in Tilburg . In the early 1960s, he worked as a music therapist for children with multiple disabilities. From 1962 he worked in a specialized facility in Doorn ( Utrechtse Heuvelrug ), where he worked after his retirement until his death.

Wim ter Burg was married twice and had seven children, including the Dutch editor Job ter Burg .

Together with the lyricist Hanna Lam (1928–1988), he wrote Bible songs for the youth and published a four-volume collection with her under the title Alles wordt nieuw . But as early as the 1950s he was writing melodies for new hymns, which found their way into various hymn books of the Dutch Reformed and Catholic Churches. His work as a music teacher and music therapist was reflected in the production of various radio programs as well as in the publication of numerous articles.
