Willem van der Gouwen (* 1650 in Amsterdam ; † approx. 1720 ) was a Dutch engraver and vignette maker .

Exact details of the birth and death of Willem, William or Gilliam van der Gouwen are unknown. From 1669 to 1670 he was apprenticed to Peter van Lisebetten (also: Peeter van Liesebetten) in Amsterdam. He is also considered a student of Bernard Picart . His period of activity is proven until 1720. He provided engravings for Het groot schilderboek (Amsterdam 1707) by Gerard de Lairesse , title vignettes and book decorations for travel works and the Bible by Pieter Mortier . He also worked as a copperplate engraver for various booksellers and designed portraits , including a portrait of Peter the Great.

Van der Gouwen's works include the engraving A stranded whale between Scheveningen and Katwijk , which is based directly on an engraving by Jakob Matham and indirectly on a drawing by Hendrick Goltzius . The representation has shaped the image of the sperm whale for over 200 years.

Joseph Strutt did not certify his work in his biographical encyclopedia of particular quality, he described them as:

“An engraver of no great note, […] and resided at Amsterdam. By him we have some bad prints for the Bible, published at that city, AD 1720. ”

“An engraver of little importance […] and lived in Amsterdam. From him we have some bad prints for the Bible that were published in this city, AD 1720 ”

He worked for well-known cartographers such as Carel Allard , Claes Janszoon Visscher or Frederik de Wit , for example he was involved in a view of the "New World" after Allard.
