The Internationale Spedition Willi Betz GmbH & Co. KG is a German freight forwarding company based in the Swabian Reutlingen . During the best of times, the company had more than 50 locations in Europe and Asia employing around 8,000 people. With around 2,000 tractors and around 3,000 trailers, Willi Betz was one of the world's largest freight carriers with its own fleet.
history
The forwarding company was founded in 1945 by Willi Betz († December 12, 2015 ) in Undingen and has since developed into an international logistics group. The expansion of the company was made possible in particular by the close contacts that Willi Betz established with the state transport company SO MAT in Bulgaria in the 1960s . The takeover, which finally took place in the 1990s, enabled the company to develop into one of the leading transport service providers in Southeast Europe and the Near and Middle East.
In 2008 the company had branches in 25 countries and achieved sales of over one billion euros and 8,000 employees. As a result of the global economic crisis , the company's turnover and number of employees decreased significantly in the following years. In 2014 around 3,000 people were still employed. As a reaction, the group was restructured, so Willi Betz separated from its subsidiary LGI at the end of 2011 in order to concentrate on the core business of forwarding and transport services as well as the expansion of activities in Eastern Europe. In 2012, Wolfgang Bisinger and Martin Rilling were appointed as managing directors; in June 2015, Rainer Bisinger succeeded Martin Rilling. Company founder Willi Betz died on December 12th, 2015 at the age of 88.

Business areas before restructuring
Before the restructuring from 2010, three major business areas were operated:
- Forwarding : The forwarding division employs around 400 people at 54 locations. The range of services extends from normal piece goods transport to automobile logistics, refrigerated transport and vehicle transport to special transports and combined transports.
- Transport : 2,000 tractors and 3,000 trailers are used in international freight traffic . The department creates individually developed timetables and transport concepts for its customers.
- Vehicle trade : Vehicles are marketed in Eastern Europe at eleven locations with around 800 employees. Willi Betz sells the brands Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Jeep, Smart and Mitsubishi in Bulgaria and Macedonia and, in addition to selling the vehicles, also offers related services.
Criminal proceedings
Since Willi Betz mostly drives with Southeastern European workers, the company has come under fire. In March 2003 there was a major raid on the Reutlingen headquarters and other European locations due to social security fraud , in which more than 600 officials were involved. On March 17, 2008, Thomas Betz was sentenced by the Stuttgart Regional Court to five years in prison and a fine of 2.16 million euros for bribery and social security fraud. The sentence was suspended after the trial was over due to the long pre- trial detention (2.5 years).
Move to Switzerland
In 2009, the management announced that the international activities of the group of companies would be directed by a new holding company, Avelli AG , in St. Gallen, Switzerland . The company's headquarters are to remain in Reutlingen.
