William Abikoff (born August 18, 1944 in New York City ) is an American mathematician who deals with complex analysis and hyperbolic geometry.

Abikoff studied electrical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now New York University ) with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a master's degree in 1966 and received his doctorate in mathematics under Georges Weill in 1971 (The limit sets of Kleinian and Reflection Groups). From 1965 to 1970 he was at Bell Laboratories . He was then an instructor and from 1972 assistant professor at Columbia University , from 1975 at the University of Illinois and from 1981 professor at the University of Connecticut .

In 1971/72 he was at the Mittag-Leffler Institute , in 1976/77 at the IHES and in 1989 at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1996/97 he was Lady Day visiting professor at the Technion , 1976 at the University of Paris-Süd , 1977 in Florence and 1976 in Perugia.

He deals with Riemann surfaces , Klein groups and Teichmüller theory as well as the visualization of geometric structures.

In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . From 1975 to 1977 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .
