William Anderson (politician, 1762)
William Anderson (* 1762 in Colony of Virginia , † December 16, 1829 in Chester , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1809 and 1819 he twice represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Anderson attended public schools in his home country. During the War of Independence he served in the Continental Army from 1777 despite his youth . He took part in several battles and rose to major. He then worked as a hotelier in Chester from 1796. In 1804 he became a district auditor in Delaware County ; in 1805 he headed the county director of the poor ( County Director of the Poor ). Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party .
In the congressional election of 1808 , Anderson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Jacob Richards on March 4, 1809 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1815 . During his time as Congressman, the British-American War of 1812 fell . In 1816 Anderson was re-elected to Congress in the first district of his state, where he could complete his last legislative term between March 4, 1817 and March 3, 1819.
William Anderson was associate district judge between 1826 and 1828. From 1828 he served as a customs inspector in Philadelphia . He died in Chester on December 16, 1829.
