William Beatty (politician)

William Beatty (born 1787 in Stewartstown , County Tyrone , Ireland , †  April 12, 1851 in Butler , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Beatty grew up in his Northern Irish homeland. In 1807 he came to the United States, where he settled in the town of Butler. During the British-American War of 1812 he served in the state militia. From 1823 to 1826 he was sheriff in Butler County . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1836 Beatty was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Samuel Smith Harrison on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Beatty was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania until 1842 . He then became the deputy sheriff in Butler County. He died on April 12, 1851 in Butler, where he was buried.
