William Bentley

Sir William Bentley KMG (1977) (born February 15, 1927 in Bury , † June 10, 1998 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

William Bentley studied at Bury Church of England High School , the University of Manchester and Wadham College . Bentley then served in the British Army from 1945 to 1948. In 1950 he married Karen Ellen Christensen. They had three daughters and two sons. He began your diplomatic work in 1952 as the embassy secretary in Tokyo . In 1958 he worked in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FO) and in 1960 at the UN headquarters before returning to the FO in 1963. From 1965 he headed the office of the embassy in Kuala Lumpur . In 1970 he was Secretary General of the UK Pavilion at Expo '70 . In 1974 he headed the Far East Department in the Foreign Office . From 1976 to 1982 he was Ambassador to Manila and from 1981 to 1983 High Commissioner in Malaysia . He then was ambassador to Oslo ( Norway ) from 1984 to 1986 .
