William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham , ( December 1, 1527 - March 6, 1597 ) was an English nobleman and politician under the Tudor .

Origin and family

William Brooke came from the Old English maternal family Cobham from the county Kent , which had received the barony Cobham in 1313th Since this barony was a barony by writ , it could also be passed on to female heirs, which happened in the 15th century when the title passed to the Brooke family. William Brooke was born on December 1, 1527, the son of George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham (1497-1557) and Mary Braye. He was engaged to be engaged at the age of 13, but then sent on a journey.

Further life and career

William Brooke turned to politics and was elected to the House of Commons for Hythe for 1547-1552 . Later, in 1555, he was re-elected to the House of Commons, this time for Rochester . Like many of his ancestors, he was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle and finally Lord Lieutenant of Kent from 1558 to 1596. In November 1558 he was sent to the Spanish Netherlands to meet King Philip II of Spain , who was staying there to report the death of his English wife, Queen Maria I.

He was also in high favor under the new Queen, Elizabeth I. He received them in 1559 at his country estate, Cobham Hall. In 1578 and again in 1588 he was ambassador to the governor of the Spanish Netherlands. On 12 February 1585 was in the Privy Council ( Privy Council appointed); in the same year he became a Knight of the Order of the Garter . Since the death of his father in 1557 he was the 10th Baron Cobham member of the House of Lords . In 1592 he was custodian of Eltham Palace and Park and in August 1596 Lord Chamberlain until his death.

His first marriage to Dorothy Nevill was childless. In his second marriage he married Frances Newton. He died on March 6, 1597 and was succeeded as the 11th Baron Cobham by Henry Brooke (1564-1618).
