Henry Brooke, 11th Baron Cobham (born November 24, 1564 in Cobham , Kent , † January 24, 1619 in the Tower of London ) was an English nobleman and politician .

life and career

Henry Brooke was the son of William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham and his second wife Frances Newton. He was born on November 24, 1564 in his father's family home, Cobham Hall . Following his father, who held influential and important offices under the Tudor dynasty , he embarked on a political career. 1588 to 1589 he was as Knight of the Shire for the county of Kent and 1593 to 1593 as Burgess for the Borough Hedon in Yorkshire elected MP in the House of Commons . In 1597, when his father died, he inherited the title of 11th Baron Cobham and became a member of the House of Lords . At the same time he took over his father's office as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports , which many of his ancestors had already held. Queen I. Charges and convictions for high treason

Under the new king of the House of Stuart , James I , his career broke off suddenly. In July 1603 he was arrested and charged with his brother Reverend George Brooke, Sir Walter Raleigh , Sir Griffin Markham and Lord Gray de Wilton for a conspiracy against the king, the so-called Main Plot (also Cobham's Plot ). This conspiracy against the king wanted to kill him and bring Arabella Stuart to the throne in his place . He was sentenced to death in November 1603 and ostracized by parliament , d. H. stripped of his titles, rights, offices and possessions. He was then not executed, but imprisoned for life in the Tower of London , where he died in 1619.

Since 1601 he was married to Lady Frances Howard (1572-1628), daughter of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham , widow of Henry FitzGerald, 12th Earl of Kildare . The marriage remained childless.
