William Cecil (Military, 1886)

Hon. William Amherst Cecil (born June 30, 1886 - September 16, 1914 on the Aisne , France ) was a British nobleman and military man.

He was the eldest son of Lord William Cecil and Mary Thyssen-Amherst, 2nd Baroness Amherst of Hackney . On his father's side, he was a grandson of William Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Exeter .

On April 14, 1910, he married Gladys Evelyn Baggallay (1884-1947) with whom he had two sons, William Alexander Evering Cecil (1912-1980) and Henry Kerr Auchmuty Cecil (1914-1942).

He served as an officer in the British Army and rose to the rank of captain of the Grenadier Guards . He fought in World War I and died on September 16, 1914 in the First Battle of the Aisne . On January 1, 1915, he was posthumously awarded the newly founded Military Cross .

Since his mother survived, her title of nobility fell in 1919 to his older son William as 3rd Baron Amherst of Hackney . His younger son Henry died in 1942 as a lieutenant in a paratrooper unit in North Africa during World War II .
