William Darling (politician)
William Young Darling CBE MC DL JP ( 1885 - February 4, 1962 ) was a British politician and author . His great-nephew is the future Minister Alistair Darling .
Life
William Darling served as Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace . He was also Lord Provost (roughly Lord Mayor) of Edinburgh and Director of the Royal Bank of Scotland . He was awarded the Order of the British Empire with the rank of Commander and the Military Cross .
Political career
For the first time Darling appeared in the general election in 1945 in the constituency of Edinburgh South to elections at the national level. As a candidate for the Unionist Party , he inherited his party colleague Samuel Chapman , who had held the House of Commons mandate since 1922 and did not run for these elections. Darling won the mandate clearly against the Labor candidate WP Earsman and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 1950 , 1951 and 1955 he defended his mandate. In 1957 Darling gave up his mandate and left the House of Commons. The due by-elections were held on May 29, 1957. The mandate won Darling's party colleague Michael Clark Hutchison .
