William Henry "Billy" Dean (born February 6, 1887 in Manchester , † May 2, 1949 in Withington , Greater Manchester ) was a British water polo player.
Dean started swimming when he was seven and won first prizes when he was ten. He began his water polo career at Manchester Swan and Salford . He won his first international match for England as a teenager. In 1909 his family moved to Hyde where he became one of the stars of the team that dominated water polo at the time. Together with George Wilkinson , he formed the backbone of the team that made the team's success. Nine English championships were held during her time. Dean played 18 times for England and was captain of the team six times. He also played soccer for Manchester United and was the club's goalkeeper for two seasons.
At the Olympic Games in 1920 he took part with the English national team and won together with Charles Sydney Smith , Paul Radmilovic , Charles Bugbee , Noel Purcell , Christopher Jones and William Peacock against Belgium 3-2 and won the gold medal. Dean scored two of the three goals in the success. After his career, he became a successful entrepreneur and became the director of an electricity company.
