William Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Hall Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage ( January 1, 1718 - October 11, 1791 ) was an Irish nobleman and politician.

He was the eldest son of Thomas Gage, 1st Viscount Gage , and Benedicta Maria Theresa Hall. His younger brother was Thomas Gage , the commander in chief of the British forces in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War .

From 1744 to 1768 he was a member of the House of Commons for the Rotten borough Seaford in Sussex , which had fewer than a hundred eligible voters. In 1754, when his father died, he inherited the latter's title, Viscount Gage . However, since this belonged to the Peerage of Ireland , there was no automatic seat in the House of Lords , so Gage remained a member of the House of Commons. He was chamberlain to the Prince of Wales and in 1757 married Elisabeth Gideon, daughter of the banker Sampson Gideon .

In 1780 he was awarded the title of Baron Gage , of Firle in the County of Sussex, in the Peerage of Great Britain , which was linked to a seat in the House of Lords. Since it could only be passed on to male descendants and he had no son, he was also given the title of Baron Gage , of High Meadow in the County of Gloucester , in 1790 , which could also be passed on to the male descendants of his brothers.

He died in 1791, the titles Viscount Gage and Baron Gage of High Meadow passed to his nephew Henry .
