William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton

William Alexander Anthony Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton (born February 19, 1811 in London , † July 15, 1863 in Paris ) was a Scottish nobleman.

William Hamilton was the son of Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Susan Beckford, a daughter of the writer William Beckford . He followed his father in 1852 as the 11th Duke of Hamilton .

William was educated at Eton College and Oxford University . From 1833 to 1835 he was, like his father, Grand Master of the Freemasons in Scotland. He held the office of Knight Marischal of Scotland and Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, but was hardly interested in British politics. In 1853 he sold his Lancashire estates for £ 329,800.

Marriage and offspring

He married on February 23, 1843 in Mannheim Marie Amelie (1817-1888) , daughter of Grand Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Baden and his wife Stéphanie de Beauharnais . The couple had the following children:
