William Henry Berwald

William Henry Berwald , born Wilhelm Heinrich Berwald (born December 26, 1864 in Schwerin , † May 8, 1948 in Loma Linda , California ) was a German-American music teacher, conductor and composer.

Life

Wilhelm Berwald was born in Schwerin, Mecklenburg, as the son of the court mirror supplier and councilor of the same name Wilhelm Berwald. The sculptor Hugo Berwald was his brother. He studied for four years at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich , where he was a student of Josef Rheinberger . After further studies in Stuttgart in 1887/88 , he became the conductor of the concert association in Libau in Kurland , before he emigrated to the USA and his name was Anglicized to William Henry Berwald . From 1892 to 1927 he was a teacher of music theory, composition and piano playing at Syracuse University in New York State . From 1921 to 1924 Berwald was conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra .

From 1897 he was married to the soprano Anna Eugenia Baker (1876–1931).

His estate is in the Archives of Syracuse University.
