William Henry Rycroft

Sir William Henry Rycroft ( February 17, 1861 - November 4, 1925 ) was a British officer, most recently in the rank of major general , and colonial governor in British North Borneo .

biography

Rycroft was the second of six children of Sir Nelson Rycroft, 4th Baronet and his wife Juliana Ogilvy. Major Sir Richard Nelson Rycroft, 5th Baronet was his older brother.

Rycroft married Grace Ronald Maria Menzies on September 28, 1887, with whom he later had the children Madalen Margaret and Julian Neil Oscar.

He joined the British Army in 1871 , served in the Highland Light Infantry Regiment from 1879 and took part in the Gordon Relief Expedition . He graduated from Staff College from 1891 to 1892 , was Deputy Assistant Adjutant General in York from 1895 to 1896 , served on the North-West Front in India from 1897 to 1898 and served on the staff during the South African War from 1899 to 1900. From 1902 to 1905 he was deployed in Somaliland , was regimental commander of the 11th Hussar (Prince Albert's Own) from 1904 to 1908, was in South Africa from 1911 to 1911 and assistant to the Quartermaster General (QMG) in the Southern Command from 1913 to 1914 . The First World War followed and in 1920 he was transferred to Ireland. A year later he was retired from the military and was governor of northern Borneo from 1922 until his death. After his death, his predecessor Aylmer Cavendish Pearson took over the governorship for the second time.

On January 1, 1918, he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), and on June 3, 1919 he was also knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB).
