William Henry Waddington (born December 11, 1826 in Saint-Rémy-sur-Avre , † January 13, 1894 in Paris ) was a French numismatist , archaeologist and politician.

The son of a British industrialist who settled in France, took part in the traditional rowing boat race at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in 1849 as a student at Cambridge University . As a scholar, he was one of the founders of the École pratique des hautes études in 1868 . Waddington also distinguished himself as the author of specialist books on archeology ( Voyage archéologique en Grèce et en Asie Mineure 1877) and numismatics ( Mélanges de numismatique et de philologie 1861).

From February 1871 he was initially a member of the Chamber of Deputies . On January 30, 1876, he was elected senator . He was re-elected on January 25, 1885. After the end of his term (January 6, 1894, 6 days before his death) he was not re-elected. From May 18, 1873 and 1877 he was Minister for Public Education and from December 14, 1877 to 1879 Foreign Minister and in this function authorized representative at the Berlin Congress in mid-1878. He also held this office during his tenure as Prime Minister. Waddington became Prime Minister of France on February 4, 1879, following the resignation of Jules Dufaure . Ten months later, on December 21, 1879, he resigned; this was preceded by questions about dismissal and amnesty. He was followed by Charles de Saulces de Freycinet as Prime Minister. From 1883 to 1893 he represented the French Republic as ambassador in London.

His extensive and important coin collection was acquired in 1897 for the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale de France .

In 1850 he had Mathilde Henriette, b. Lutteroth (1825–1852), daughter of Henri Lutteroth , married. After her untimely death, he married May King Waddington for the second time. She published Letters from a diplomats wife from 1893 to 1900, published in London in 1903.
